Poe's Quarrel with Boston Writers

In his early, positive review of these stories, Poe clearly identifies with this New England author. Commenting on "The Minister's Black Veil," for instance, he observes that Hawthorne is writing for two audiences and that the apparent moral message eclipses the half-concealed crime story.
