Poe's Life in Boston
THE PIONEER: A LITERARY AND CRITICAL MAGAZINE,
January 1843: Volume 1, Number 1
The New England poet and editor James Russell Lowell was the first to publish Poe's short story "The Tell-Tale Heart" in the first issue of The Pioneer, the literary journal he briefly published at 67 Washington Street in Boston.
Poe described the closure of the journal after just three issues as "a most severe blow to the cause–the cause of a Pure Taste." Lowell later wrote Poe possessed "that indescribable something which men have agreed to call genius."
