The Boston Exchange Coffee House Engraving
Date Unknown
Eliza Poe's final performance in Boston, before she moved to the stage in New York City, took place on May 16, 1809, at the Boston Exchange Coffee House. Sometimes described as the nation's first luxury hotel, the Exchange was located between Congress and Devonshire Streets near the Old State House, across State Street from where Eliza lived with her mother when they first arrived in America 13 years earlier. It was destroyed by fire in 1818.
